Your assignment (due by hardcopy on Thursday, April 21 and worth 15% of your grade)
has seven parts.
First, read (completely) one of the following readings:
1. Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, “The Coddling of the American Mind,” pp.
278-290.
2. Conor Kelly, “Feminist Ethics: Evaluating the Hookup Culture,” pp. 316-328.
3. James Rachels, “Active and Passive Euthanasia,” pp. 372-378.
4. John Stuart Mill, “Speech in Defense of Capital Punishment,” pp. 390-397.
5. Aldo Leopold, “The Land Ethic,” pp. 445-457.
6. John Rawls, “50 Years After Hiroshima,” pp. 469-476.
7. George Yancy and Judith Butler, “Black Lives Matter,” pp. 572-580.
8. Robert Nozick, “The Entitlement Theory of Justice,” pp. 590-598.
9. Peter Singer, “Famine, Affluence, and Morality,” pp. 614-622.
10. An approved applied ethics chapter/article.
Second, briefly explain and summarize both (1) the main (applied ethics) claim of the
reading and (2) the main argument of the reading. (Remember that applied ethics is not
the same as either meta-ethics or normative ethics.)
Third, schematize an argument of your own that is against either (1) the main (applied
ethics) claim of the reading or (2) the main argument of the reading.
A schematized argument is an argument in “premise-conclusion form.” For example:
P1. If different cultures have different moral codes, then there are no objective
moral values.
P2. Different cultures have different moral codes.
————————————————————
C. So, there are no objective moral values.
Fourth, explain how your argument is supposed to be against either (1) the main (applied
ethics) claim of the reading or (2) the main argument of the reading. That is, explain the
relevance of your argument.
Fifth, explain the reasoning of the argument. That is, explain how the conclusion is
supposed to follow from the premises. Use correct terminology from the logic section.
2
Sixth, defend the premises. Provide argumentation for the premises and defend them
against any objections.
Seventh, critically evaluate, on your own, whether your argument ultimately succeeds or
fails. Defend your answer.
Formatting:
Your papers should be double-spaced, in 12 point font, in Times New Roman, with 1
inch margins. They should also be less than 3 pages in length (not including any
citations). There is no minimum. (Be concise with your writing. Don’t use fluff.)
Remember to cite all outside sources if you use any. If in doubt, cite it. I do not care what
citation style you use, as long as it is a legitimate citation style.
