1st Paragraph – Street Life Summary: Briefly summarize Street Life: Poverty, Gangs, and a Ph.D. You do not need to retell Rios’s entire life story, merely provide a summary of the important events that shaped his life. Helpful tips for summarizing an autobiography can be found here.
Do not be tempted to copy or paraphrase a summary from the internet or from the Street Life back cover.
This will be considered plagiarism and will result in the filing of an Incident Report to El Camino College;
in addition, you will earn zero credit for the assignment.
2nd Paragraph – Socialization/Agents of Socialization: What is socialization, according to Ferris and Stein? Include the definition from The Real World in this paragraph. What are agents of socialization? In his book, Victor Rios discusses particular individuals and significant life experiences that had a profound impact on his socialization. Identify some of these people and experiences and describe how they influenced his life and development of self. Direct quotes from the textbook and Street Life are required in paragraph two; be sure quotes are noted by quotation marks and followed by MLA style in-text citations.
3rd Paragraph – Status: Define status, according to Ferris and Stein. Identify and explain the four kinds of statuses discussed in the textbook and provide an example of each for Victor Rios in Street Life. Direct quotes from the textbook and Street Life are required in paragraph three; be sure quotes are noted by quotation marks and followed by MLA style in-text citations.
4th Paragraph – Roles: Define role, according to Ferris and Stein. Over the course of his life, Victor Rios experienced role strain, role conflict, and role exit.
