You will be writing a short formal research essay using MLA documentation. The following guidelines should be observed:
• Your argument will revolve around a CAUSE-EFFECT thesis.
• Your research will include at least three academically appropriate sources. You may also use one or two strong news sources or other appropriate sources such as documentaries and interviews with experts. (As discussed in class, avoid Wikipedia, Google Ask, and similar “generic” sources.)
• Parenthetical citations will be used to cite sources in the body of the essay.
• In the body of the essay, use signal phrases and introductions to quotes or paraphrases of outside sources.
• The entire paper will be printed and formatted in MLA style, including the heading, title, margins and citations.
• Include a works cited page formatted in MLA style.
• The paper will need to be 4 pages AND include a works cited page.
• Be certain that the essay is not just a collection of other authors’ ideas. YOUR own ideas/analyses are key in the final grade of this essay. Your own conclusions about the data you’ve researched must be carefully considered. Finally, your ideas and the data must “flow together” into a cohesive essay.
• As always, you will be graded on content and style for this essay. However, your correct use of MLA-style documentation and formatting will also be part of the grade.
