Discussion – Culture: North vs. South
For the discussion sections, respond to the discussion topic provided and reply to at least three other students’ responses. If a response is not complete or something is not clear, ask for an explanation. If you are asked about your response, answer or explain in more detail. In this way, students can have a “discussion” as you might have in a classroom setting.
Note: This is a controversial topic. This assignment is meant to give each student the opportunity to understand the thinking of both sides leading to the most devastating war in United States history. Remember that any student comments that you disagree with are not necessarily what that student actually believes. Do your research, explain the perspective you have been assigned, and be polite and respectful in your discussion.
If the first letter of your last name is from A to L, you are to take the perspective of a person living in the North and explain and discuss the differences in culture between the North and the antebellum South. Discuss the political and economic position of the North relative to that of the South and the disagreements that existed. Include why a Northerner might think the Northern culture is superior. Explain the institution of slavery as a person of the North might see it and explain why a Northerner would reject or defend that position.
If the first letter of your last name is from M to Z, you are to take the perspective of a person living in the South and explain and discuss the differences in culture between the South and the antebellum North. Discuss the political and economic position of the South relative to that of the North and the disagreements that existed. Include why a Southerner might think the Southern culture is superior. Explain the institution of slavery as a person of the South might see it and explain why a Southerner would defend or reject that institution.
As always, cite your sources.
NOTE: You are not being asked to agree or to disagree with any position. You will be graded on how well you explain the political and social views of a given geographic area and explain and discuss the differences in perspective with the other area.
